(1) Classroom Block 21-5-115

Hazard: Tripping and falling over loose cords

Injuries: Bruises, abrasions or a concussion if you hit your head a a hard surface after you trip.

Unsafe Conditions: Cords not secured properly to the floor and lying around haphazardly.

Unsafe Act: People might be absent-minded and forget that there is loose cords on the floor and they might trip over them whilst walking.

(2) Staircase in between Block 22, 23,24, 25

Hazard: Railings not high enough for support

Injuries: Concussion, bruises, minor scrapes

Unsafe Conditions: When it is raining, the railing get wet and provide no help to those who hold onto the railings for support when climbing a flight of stairs.

Unsafe Act: People using the staircase might hold onto the railings but realize that they are too short and not use the railings. When they grasps onto the railing when it is wet, they might not grip the railing very well which would cause them to lose balance and slip.

(3) Classroom Block 22-5-129

Hazard : shelf is protruded

Injuries : cause the body to be in pain / bruises on the body after bumping onto it.

Unsafe condition: the shelf is more than 4 inch .

Unsafe Act: people who does not have good eyesight might not be walking safely and can get injured anytime.

(4) Classroom Block 21-5-115

Hazard : hook is protruding .

Injuries : bruises and cuts

Unsafe Conditions : if it is left protruding out like this, bags or clothes will get stuck on the hook .

Unsafe Act : People who did not notice the hook might unknowingly get their things hooked up and can cause one to fall .

(5) Staircase between block 22, 23, 24, 25

Hazard: Wet floor can cause slip and fall

Injuries: Can cause head concussion and maybe death

Unsafe conditions: No barricade to show that the floor is wet

Unsafe act: People who are inattentive to their surroundings

(6) Classroom block 21-5-115

Hazard: ledge is protruding and seat is too close to the ledge

Injuries: Can cause cut to the person’s shoulder when the person is standing up

Unsafe condition: when seats are placed too close it will be dangerous

Unsafe act: Not being cautious when they are sitting there will cause them to get cut by the ledge.

Location:walkway along block 18,level 5.

Hazard:protruding object along walkway

injury:bruises or cuts

unsafe condition;protruding object may led to cuts or bruises if walkers will to knock into it.

unsafe act:walkers may be inattentive and not pay attention to their surrounding and knock into protruding object.

Hazard: Tripping and falling over loose cords

Unsafe Conditions: Fire extinguisher is not on the hook and is place on the floor thus might be an obstruction.

Unsafe Act: People might trip over it and fall if never notice it

Hazard: stepping onto the hole and fall

Injuries : Bruises , cuts, leg injures

Unsafe Conditions: The Floor tile is missing and those who are rushing might not notice it.

Unsafe Act: People might trip over it or step onto it and gets injure if they are not careful.

Location:walkway along block 23,level 8.

Hazard:protruding edge along walkway

injuries:bruises,cuts

unsafe conditions:no metal grills were in place on the edge which lead to the drain,thus,walkers may not notice the protruding edge and may trip over the edge,leading to injuries.

unsafe act:passer by may be inattentive to their surrounding and unaware of the edge,thus trip over and fall,leading to injuries.

Workplace safety and health is important because it is important to keep myself and the people I am working with safe. This is so that work can be done in a safe environment without anyone being injured and to keep up with the deadline given to us. If anyone of my colleague is injured or fall sick the workload will be even more unreasonable than before. This might give extra stress to everyone working together which will result in an poor environment to work in. People will also start to blame each other, and information will not get pass down properly. If there is poor communication between us, we might end up causing the workplace to be even more dangerous in case some of the machines might be not functioning and should be not in used during that time.

If someone working with me got injured, it will be hard for me to focus on my given job as well because I am worried about my colleague. It will be even hard on me if I was the one that made my colleague lose his hand (like the man in the video). This is because I will keep thinking that I am the bad person that let it happen to him even though we are supposed to help each other when in need. This will cause me to be in fear whenever I must help somebody again as I am afraid that the same thing might happen again. This will cause a lot of people to be afraid to step into the building industry again as it is too difficult to have the same thing happen again, even though lessons are learnt, and more precautions is placed than before.

Therefore, workplace safety and health is important in order for people to work together effectively and to help each other prevent accidents from happening.

I realized that accidents can also happen slowly over time without the people or people around them knowing as well. Which is very unfortunate for the person and their families and colleagues around them.

Next time I will try to take breaks with my colleagues so that we will try to reduce the risk of occupational accidents that will happen to us. Maybe try to help our colleagues also if we see someone doing their work for a long period of time already, so that they can get some rest.

Workplace safety and health are important to me because if I was the breadwinner in the household and accidents happen to me ( for example losing an arm like the man in the video ), financial problems would occur and it may affect the lifestyle of my family negatively ; thus becoming a burden ( physically and mentally ) to them . Without an arm , it will be tough for me to do any work ; even by doing simple things like carrying items and drinking water. Apart from that , as an employee of the company , I will need to have the initiative to know all the rules and regulations to protect myself and prevent any accidents from happening . Everyone wishes to have a safe working environment to work in and also returning home safely after long hours of work .When a workplace is safe, I would feel more comfortable and have the confidence when I am in a good environment and the productivity would get a boost. If accidents do occur , other employees may be distracted or will take time off from work in the aftermath of the accident and have to stop work to deal with my injury. They would be fearful to even work in the same area or industry as me . Also , when I happen to be in the accident , companies will form a bad impression on me as they may think that I did not follow the regulations strictly that caused such accident to happen .

Over the years , many workers have suffered illnesses caused by, or made worse by their work . Especially to those who work in hazardous environment ( for example in the chemical factory ) where they inhale large amount of hazardous particles that damage their health ( mostly lungs ). When one’s health is being affected , it may delay the work and slow down the efficiency as they are unfit to give instructions to the workers and the employer might not be able to hire them as their employee due to health issues that may affect the company’s revenue or image . Hence in my perspective , being healthy can help to lead other colleagues through work and can help each other to double check the machines before using it which can reduce the probability of getting injured . Thus , I think that workplace safety and health are important to me.

I realised that accidents can be prevented by knowing all the rules and regulations beforehand so as to prevent accidents from happening .One can confirm the safety rules with colleagues or can go to the company’s website to look for safety rules. By doing so , families and relatives would not need to worry about me getting injured during work .

Next time I will try out by communicating with my colleagues more and ensure that all precautions are taken place so that I will have the confidence to operate the machines instead of being fearful .

Workplace safety and health is important to me because Singapore being one of the smallest country in the world,need manpowers in order for the country to continue develop economically.Singapore now being one of the wealthiest country in the world in such a small span of time is not easy.Thus,in order to ensure the country would continue to develop and grow,attracting MNC is essential.Thus,in order to attract MNC internationally to invest in Singapore and SME to set up business in Singapore,it is necessary that companies have follow the policy of the workplace safety and health[WSH] requirements in Singapore.Afterall,MNCs are encourage to set up their business in Singapore due to our strong and healthy workforce.

I,as MOM/Nation are require to educate the companies stakeholders on the importance of having the required equipment,such as safety goggles,safety shoes, to ensure safe environment for the individuals in the company.I am also require to continuosly conduct spot checks or inspections on the companies in order to ensure that they followed the WSH requirements.Companies who failed to follow the policy of WSH shall be punish,such as in the form of fine.This not only will efficiently help to prevent injuries in the workplace and also casualties from occcuring. I,as MOM/Nation are also require to set up campaign to actively promote the importance of workplace safety and health to individuals of Singapore through social media platform or in the form of commercial ads.

The importance of workplace safety and health are to be emphasise in order to ensure economic growth in Singapore.Afterall,healthy workforce[healthy singaporean individuals] attracts MNCs to set up their businesses in Singapore.MNC play a important role in contributing to the economic growth in Singapore as they provide huge number of jobs for Singaporean.Therefore in order to ensure economic growth in Singapore,WSH is important in order to safeguard the health of Singaporeans and only then will it attract MNC to invest in Singapore by setting up companies which therfore help to facilitate the growth and development of our country.Afterall,no companies would like to invest in a country with lack of manpower and poor health,therefore workplace safety and health is important for me,as the MOM/Nation.

I realized that accidents can occur anywhere and anytime if one is not careful.Such accidents can result in fatal injuries such as death and major injuries which led to handicap.I also realise that safety precaution must always take place in a worksite in order for the workers to work in a safer workplace.

Next time I will try to implement more rule and regulations that will further safeguard the safety of workers and more precaution measures were taken place at workplace so that lesser injuries would occur.

To be more proactive in preventing accidents, every party is involved, whether or not is from the higher management or the employees.

For the employees, they would need to be more aware of their surroundings and be more observant towards any potential safety hazards.For example when a piece of equipment is checked for maintenance, the employees would need to ensure that the machine is fully operational and in good working condition before starting to use the machine again. If there is any potential hazards noticed, the employees should inform the supervisor or whoever is responsible for maintaining the machinery, so that repairs can be made to guarantee that it is safe to use. Employees should be aware of any possible risks that might affect their work which will facilitate them in taking necessary steps to reduce any likelihood of danger.In addition, stress to any employee can lead to depression and lead to workplace accident. Some of the main reason includes, extended of working hours, excess of works, insecurity of jobs and problems which occur between colleagues . So, instead of taking stress on ones shoulders, one should discuss it with their supervisor and ask them to look after ones problems which one are facing in the company, if not share it with a trust friend or family .This helps one to be able to stay alert at work and not get distracted.

Companies can ensure that proper protective equipment are provided and given to the employees. The protective equipment can range from earplugs, masks, goggles or full-body protective suits. All these will reduce the risk of employees to get any major injuries. In the long-run, it would benefit the company as it would show that the company is driven to ensure the safety of the workers first.This will also build up the reputation of the companies and attract more customers and manpower to work for the companies in the long run.Not only that,companies should also ensure safety barriers are always put in place at locations where is dangerous for employees to access.The safety exit must always be there and is available all the time , it must also
clear usage of equipment or items so that during emergency people can escape.

What the Ministry of Manpower or government can do before allowing any company to start a business in Singapore, the company would need to adhere to guidelines put out by the Ministry or the government. For example, before operating any heavy equipment, there must be a set of guidelines that the worker needs to follow to ensure that everything flows smoothly and there is zero room for danger. If the checklist is not adhered to, there would be a higher likelihood of injuries. Therefore, with guidelines in place that the company can follow, it would be easier for any inspector to monitor and point out risks or unusual things.Not only that,the MOM or government should also ensure that both employees and employers are familiar with the policy of the guidelines of the WSH by making it compulsory for each and individuals to attend classes conducted by specialists in order to further reduce number of injuries and casualties in the workplace.The MOM or government can also spread the guidelines of WSH through social media platforms in order to ensure that more singaporeans are aware of the importance of workplace safety and health ,efficiently reducing number of injuries and casualties from occuring.

In order to take a more pro-active stance towards preventing accidents , government can implement a new law by stating if the number of accidents exceeds the normal rate in the company ( for example if the accident happen twice ) , it will have to cease its operation and unable to operate again . With a stricter law , companies will be more firm and alert into looking out for any machines that can cause harm to the employees . Apart from that , government can send a few worker spies into the company to keep a lookout on the employees whether they have properly function the machines. If the employees did not follow the rules on how to function the machines correctly , the worker spies can report it back to the government and they will take actions on the employees and company . Government can also do an impromptu spot checks without alerting the company when the employees are working . This is to ensure that the employees are always on task when functioning the machines even when there is no one to keep an eye on them which helps to reduce risks of accident.

We can take a pro-active stand towards preventing the accident by also being more attentive towards our colleagues when we are working together. This is so that we can be more aware of what is going on around us to be able to reduce the likelihood of accidents occurring in our workplace. We should communicate with each other even more so that everyone will be aware of the instructions and what we should and should not do at that point of time. Everyone should be alert and if someone is not feeling well, colleagues around that person should try to ask whether that person is okay or that person need help during that time and to provide help to that person immediately. We should always make sure that our colleagues around us are always following the safety rules for example even simple things like wearing safety googles. This is what I think we can do pro-actively to prevent accidents from happening in the future.
